Hip replacement surgery is a procedure through which the orthopedic surgeon removes the ends of both bones in a diseased or damaged joint and replaces with prosthetic implant that are made up of metal, ceramic and hard plastic parts to create a new joint surface. This surgery is performed by replacing the entire hip joint i.e. called total hip replacement or by replacing half that is called as semi hip replacement. People go for hip joint replacement surgery to free themselves from the pain incurred due to arthritis or fracture in the hip. The artificial hip joint improves mobility and reduces the pain that you may be facing for a long time because of arthritis, damage or fracture.
Hip replacement is a major operation, thus it must be considered when you experience certain symptoms and feel the need for it. Common symptoms of hip replacements are as under
The decision of undergoing the hip replacement surgery is not an individual choice, it is a joint decision that must be taken with the consent of you, your family, your personal doctor as well as your orthopedic surgeon. The decision making procedure starts with the reference of your personal doctor to an orthopedic surgeon for test and evaluation of symptoms and history of patient.
There are no age as well as weight restrictions for undergoing Hip Joint Replacement Surgery. The surgery is based on the pain as well as disability factor of the patient. Till date the hip replacement operations have been successful for every age group. The doctors or the surgeons can thus recommend for the replacement surgery if the patient’s everyday activity is hindered because of excessive hip pain on a daily basis. This hip pain may continue even while taking rest or sleeping. The movement of the legs may also become limited because of the stiffness in a hip. Last but not the least, pain killer therapy as well as other mild exercises are also not relieving from the intensity of pain.
Hip replacement operations are performed at all major cities in India like New Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, Goa, Kolkata, Bangalore, and Ahmedabad and so on. Hip Replacement Surgeries in India are comparatively much cheaper than other countries.
Types and techniques of Hip Joint Replacement Surgery
There are specifically two types of Hip replacement surgeries, one that is most commonly used is the Total hip replacement surgery and the other one is the semi (half) hip replacement surgery. The surgeons adopt various techniques to do these surgeries.
Anterior hip replacement technique is also known as mini anterior approach towards hip replacement. It provides similar results as the traditional hip replacement procedure of replacing worn out bones of the hip joints with prosthetic implants. The only difference in anterior technique is that the method of opening the body to reach for hip joint. It has emerged as a feasible substitute of posterior or traditional approach.
While undergoing the anterior hip replacement operation the orthopedic surgeon uses a small incision that’s approximately 4 inches long; which is located in front of the leg or hip portion, through this approach the surgeon can easily push the muscle aside instead of cutting and making passage through them to reach the hip joint and again reattaching the muscle. This method is considered best because it causes less trauma and damage to the soft tissue, risk of dislocation of new prosthetic implant is lesser and it also allows quick recovery.
This surgery is also known as semi Arthroplasty. In this procedure the ball that is scientifically called ‘femoral head’ of the worn out or damaged joint is replaced with the prosthetic implant. During this procedure, the socket i.e. the acetabulum is not replaced. Partial hip replacement operations are usually conducted when the patient has fractured or broken his hips or had a traumatic hip injury. This type of hip replacement surgery is not recommended for degenerative arthritis in hip joint. It is also a good technique of semi hip replacement surgery.
Minimally invasive hip replacement technique is a process through which the orthopedic surgeon can implant the prosthetic components through one or two smaller incisions. Operation using such technique means that there will be a very small scar, less post-operative pain, less loss of blood during surgery and shorter recovery time. Tough the time taken for the surgery may be more. For operation the surgeon may also require some special equipment that may not be available everywhere. For minimal Invasive Hip replacement surgery, patients must first talk to the doctor.
Bilateral hip joint replacement surgery is a surgery where the surgeons replace and resurfaces both the hips at the same time because of excessive stiffness and arthritic pain. This type of surgery is not common, because arthritis in hips do not usually advances at a same rate. But occasionally, such situations may appear. If there is any major damage along with severe pain because of arthritis in both the hips, then the candidate may be advised to undergo bilateral hip replacement operation. The bilateral hip replacement surgery cost in Delhi is much more in comparison to other techniques and this is where we at BMS can save your hard earned money.
The recovery is fast, but still physical and emotional support is required during the initial phase of recovering.
In the total hip replacement operation the worn out or damaged bone and cartilage is replaced with prosthetic implants. Procedure for total hip replacement operation are as follows:
In the total hip replacement procedure both acetabulum and femoral head is replaced with prosthetic implants whereas with semi hip replacement usually the femoral head is only replaced. The procedure for semi hip replacement operation/syrgery comprises of removing and replacing the damaged femoral head and neck with bipolar prosthetic implant. The artificial component is placed at a particular place with or without the help of cement. After this surgery you will be shifted to the recovery room where your recovery from anesthesia will be minutely monitored. Once the effect of anesthesia is gone and you wake, you will then be shifted to your hospital ward.
What to expect after hip replacement surgery
The surgery takes around 2 to 4 hours. The rest of the time may take in the preparation of performing the surgery. After surgery the patient is taken to the recovery room where he will be observed for another 1 to 4 hours. Close observation for body sensation and blood circulation will be done. Symptoms like numbness or tingling effect is normal, but still it must be notified to the nurses there. After steadying the patient will be transferred to their hospital ward.
Intravenous fluid is given to the patient during immediate recovery period so that the fluid lost in surgery may be replaced with it. Patients may be given antibiotics and painkillers through IV. From the site of the surgical wound, you can notice tubes draining fluid. The drainage of fluid is monitored by the nurse who is attending you. Dressing will be changed by the surgeon along with the staff after 2 to 4 days.
Pain killers may cause nausea and vomiting in some patients, so anti-nausea medications will be given to them beforehand. All important measures are taken to prevent clotting of blood. The doctors encourage their patients to exercise their new hip so that blood clots may be prevented. Patients may also find difficulty while urinating. This occurs as a result of pain medication. Catheters are placed in bladder to allow urine to pass normally.
All major surgeries carry some risk and thus it is obvious that hip replacement surgery, also carries some risk and complications. Some general complication of surgery are as follows:
Following the surgery, if you experience prolonged pain and swelling in your operated leg, pain in chest or breathlessness, then in such case you must immediately contact your doctor or surgeon to seek medical advice. Sometimes the patience find their one leg longer than the other. If the surgeon is not experienced enough, then during operation if extra care is not made then damage of nerve may also occur that may cause tingling, numbness, or difficulty in moving a muscle.
For the entire procedure the cost of hip replacement surgery in India is approximately around $3000 to $5000, depending upon the type of joint you choose from. The increase in cost of the surgery depends upon selection of joints based upon their made such as Indian made, USA made or German made. The orthopedic surgeon will evaluate the condition of the patient from his/her medical history, X-rays, MRI for checking the bone and soft tissues. If it’s the only solution, then they may provide you with a list of preparation that is required for surgery such as blood tests and loosing of weight is required.
